What Are Additive-Free Spirits?

The Short Answer

Additive-free spirits are exactly what the name suggests: spirits made without any artificial flavourings, colourings, sweeteners, glycerin, caramel, chemical smoothing agents or any other post-distillation additives. What goes into the bottle is the pure result of fermentation and distillation, nothing more.

In a world where most commercial spirits are modified after distillation to create consistency, mask imperfections, or simulate qualities they do not naturally possess, additive-free spirits represent a return to honest craftsmanship. The flavour comes from the raw material and the distillation process alone.

What Counts as an Additive?

Most consumers would be surprised to learn how many substances are routinely added to spirits after distillation. These include:

Colourings such as caramel (E150), used in most mass-produced whiskies and rums to create the illusion of age. Artificial dyes are also common in flavoured spirits and liqueurs.

Sweeteners including sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, aspartame and glycerin. These are widely used in rum, tequila and flavoured vodka to create smoothness and mask the harsh edges of poorly distilled spirit.

Flavourings, both natural and artificial, added to replicate characteristics that should come from ingredients and process. Vanillin (synthetic vanilla), citric acid and botanical extracts are common.

Chemical smoothing agents such as activated carbon filtration (used by most industrial vodka producers to strip character from cheaply distilled spirit) and glycerin, which adds a false viscosity and sweetness.

Preservatives and stabilisers that extend shelf life or prevent cloudiness in flavoured and coloured spirits.

Why Does It Matter?

The additives listed above are not necessarily dangerous in isolation. The issue is transparency. When a rum's golden colour comes from caramel colouring rather than barrel ageing, the consumer is being misled about what they are drinking. When a vodka's smoothness comes from glycerin rather than careful distillation, the product's quality is cosmetic.

Additive-free spirits earn their character through three things: the quality of raw materials, the skill of the distiller, and time. There are no shortcuts and nothing to hide behind.

Additive-Free by Spirit Category

The implications of going additive-free differ significantly across spirit categories. Each type of spirit has its own set of industrial shortcuts that additive-free producers reject.

What Is Additive-Free Vodka? Most commercial vodkas rely on activated carbon filtration and glycerin to create the illusion of smoothness. Additive-free vodka achieves its character through quality raw materials and precision distillation alone.

What Is Additive-Free Gin? Many commercial gins use artificial botanical extracts, sweeteners and flavourings rather than real botanical infusion. Additive-free gin uses only real, natural botanicals with nothing added post-distillation.

What Is Additive-Free Rum? Rum is arguably the most adulterated spirit category. Caramel colouring, sugar dosing and artificial flavourings are widespread, even in so-called premium brands. Additive-free rum is a radical act of honesty.

Why Choose Additive-Free Spirits? The case for additive-free spirits goes beyond marketing and into transparency, process, and flavour authenticity.

The Spirits Behind the Philosophy

Additive-free production takes on distinct character depending on the spirit category. These guides explore what makes each category unique and how Sanpatong approaches them.

What Is Rhum Agricole? Rum made from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses. The Rebel range brings this centuries-old Caribbean tradition to Southeast Asia, where sugarcane originated.

What Is Fusion Gin? A new category of gin defined by Sanpatong, using a tropical fruit brandy base instead of neutral grain spirit. The Imagin range is the first Fusion Gin in the world.

What Is Coconut Flower Nectar Brandy? A spirit distilled from the sweet sap of coconut flower buds, unlike anything else in the spirits world. It forms the base of Imagin Fusion Gin and is showcased in the Distiller's Reserve Eau de Vie collection.

How Additive-Free Spirits Are Made

Going additive-free is not just about what you leave out. It requires a fundamentally different approach at every stage of production.

How Are Craft Spirits Made? A guide to the full distillation process, from raw ingredient to finished bottle, and what separates craft production from industrial methods.

What Is Copper Pot Still Distillation? Why the oldest distillation method still produces the finest spirits, and the active role copper plays in purifying the spirit naturally.

What Is Farm-to-Bottle Spirits? What it means to control every stage from ingredient to finished product, and why most distilleries do not.

How Sanpatong Distillery Approaches Additive-Free

At Sanpatong Distillery in Chiang Mai, every spirit across the entire portfolio is additive-free. This is not a marketing claim applied to a single product line. It is a foundational principle that governs every bottle.

The commitment starts at the source. Sanpatong operates an integrated farm-to-bottle process using chemical-free ingredients. The cassava for Elevated Vodka and Elevated Gin comes from sustainable Thai farms. The sugarcane for Rebel Rhum Agricole is first-press juice from farms on Doi Inthanon, harvested and pressed within three hours. The coconut flower nectar for Imagin Fusion Gin is single-origin from Thai coconut blossoms.

Every spirit is distilled using multi-stage alembic copper pot stills with an ambient-cooled copper reflux pipe. Critically, Sanpatong does not use activated carbon purification. The purity of the spirit is achieved through distillation skill, not chemical stripping.

After distillation, nothing is added. No colourings, no flavourings, no sweeteners, no glycerin, no chemical smoothing agents. All spirits are rested for a minimum of 120 days in bespoke stainless steel resting tanks before bottling.

The result is a range of spirits that are 100% natural, additive-free, non-GMO, gluten-free and sustainably crafted.
