What Is Fusion Gin?

A new category of gin, defined by Sanpatong Distillery. Here is what it is, how it works, and why it matters.

What Is Fusion Gin?

The Short Answer

Fusion Gin is a category of gin in which the base spirit is not a neutral grain alcohol but a tropical fruit brandy, distilled from 100% fruit. The botanicals, led by juniper, are then distilled into this characterful base using London Dry production standards: no artificial additives, no post-distillation flavourings, colourings or sweeteners. Nothing is added after the final distillation except water to reach bottling strength.

The result is a gin that is juniper-forward and structurally familiar, yet fundamentally different from any other gin on the market. The base spirit contributes flavour, depth and complexity before a single botanical is introduced. Traditional gin starts with a blank canvas. Fusion Gin starts with a painting and adds to it.

Why a New Category Was Necessary

To understand why Fusion Gin exists, it helps to understand what already existed and where the gap was.

The gin world has well-established categories. London Dry is defined by its neutral base, juniper dominance and strict prohibition on post-distillation additions. Plymouth Gin is geographically protected and slightly earthier. Old Tom is sweeter. Genever uses a malt wine base. Contemporary or New Western gins push juniper to the background in favour of other botanicals. There are also barrel-aged gins, flavoured gins, compound gins (which are not redistilled at all) and regional terroir gins that emphasise local ingredients.

What none of these categories addressed was the base spirit itself. With the exception of Genever (which uses malt wine), every gin category assumes a neutral spirit foundation. The botanicals do the work; the base is invisible. This means that in most gins, regardless of how creative the botanical bill is, the underlying spirit contributes nothing to the flavour. It is simply a vehicle.

Stefan Rakoczi and Torsten Pape, the founders of Sanpatong Distillery, saw this as both a limitation and an opportunity. What if the base spirit were not neutral but characterful? What if it were a high-quality fruit brandy, distilled from tropical produce, carrying its own flavour and terroir into the final gin? And what if this were done within the discipline of London Dry production standards, so the result was still unmistakably a gin?

That question became Fusion Gin.

How Fusion Gin Is Made

The production of Fusion Gin follows a multi-stage distillation process with strict rules at every stage.

Stage one: the fruit brandy base. The process begins with tropical fruit, harvested at peak ripeness. The fruit is fermented using only natural components (yeast, nutrients and enzymes necessary for converting the fruit's sugars into alcohol) and then double-distilled to create a pure fruit brandy. The brandy is distilled from 100% fruit with no artificial additives or enhancements at any stage. The base spirit must reach a high purity while preserving the natural character of the fruit.

Stage two: botanical maceration. The double-distilled fruit brandy is macerated with carefully selected botanicals. Juniper berries must remain the dominant flavour, as in any gin. The supporting botanicals may include tropical flowers, herbs, spices and fruits that complement the character of the base spirit. All botanicals must be natural; synthetic flavourings are prohibited.

Stage three: the third distillation. The macerated spirit undergoes a third and final distillation, during which vapour infusion further enhances the depth and clarity of the botanical profile. The final distillate must come off the still at no less than 70% ABV, preserving both the juniper-forward character and the rich, fruity notes of the tropical brandy.

Stage four: dilution and resting. The distillate is diluted with water to bottling strength, typically between 40% and 47% ABV. No additives of any kind are permitted after this final distillation: no flavourings, no colourings, no sweeteners.

The entire process adheres to the same core principle as London Dry Gin: everything that defines the spirit's character must be present at the point of distillation. Nothing is added afterwards. The difference is what goes in before.

What Defines the Category

Sanpatong Distillery has established clear standards that define Fusion Gin and distinguish it from other gin categories:

Base spirit. Must be distilled from organic or pure tropical fruit brandies (such as coconut flower nectar, mango, lychee or longan), not from neutral grain spirit. The base must be 100% fruit, with no artificial additives.

Juniper dominance. As with all gin, juniper must be the predominant flavour. The tropical base adds depth and character, but the spirit must remain identifiable as a gin.

Natural botanicals only. All flavouring must come from natural botanicals, fruits and herbs. Artificial flavours and synthetic additives are prohibited.

Multi-stage distillation. A minimum of triple distillation: double distillation of the fruit brandy base, followed by a third distillation with botanicals.

No post-distillation additions. Nothing may be added after the final distillation except water. No colourings, sweeteners, flavourings or chemical enhancements.

Minimum ABV. Must be bottled at a minimum of 38% ABV. At 57% ABV, it qualifies as Navy Strength Fusion Gin.

Regional emphasis. While there is no strict geographical restriction, Fusion Gin is most appropriately applied to gins using tropical fruits sourced from Southeast Asia. Local sourcing of botanicals is encouraged to maintain authenticity and support local agriculture.

Fusion Gin vs Other Gin Categories

The clearest way to understand Fusion Gin's position is to compare it directly to the categories it sits alongside.

vs London Dry Gin. London Dry starts with a neutral grain spirit. Fusion Gin starts with a tropical fruit brandy. Both prohibit post-distillation additions. Both require juniper dominance. The difference is that Fusion Gin's base spirit is a flavour contributor, not a blank canvas.

vs Contemporary/New Western Gin. Contemporary gins push juniper to the background and let other botanicals dominate, but they still use a neutral base spirit. Fusion Gin maintains juniper dominance while introducing complexity through the base spirit itself. The innovation is in the foundation, not in the botanical bill.

vs Flavoured Gin. Flavoured gins add flavour after distillation, often with artificial colourings and sweeteners. Fusion Gin permits no post-distillation additions whatsoever. The tropical character comes from the base spirit, not from additions.

vs Genever. Genever is the closest parallel, as it also uses a characterful base (malt wine). But Genever's malt base produces a very different flavour profile: malty, rich, sometimes aged. Fusion Gin's tropical fruit brandy base produces bright, fruity, aromatic complexity. They share a philosophy (the base matters) but express it in entirely different ways.

Imagin: The First Fusion Gin

Sanpatong Distillery's Imagin is the first Fusion Gin in the world. Every expression in the range is distilled from a base of 100% coconut flower nectar brandy, making it the first gin ever produced from this base spirit.

The name carries a dual meaning: it reflects the power of imagination and simultaneously declares 'I'm a Gin'.

The Imagin range comprises four expressions, each built on the same coconut flower nectar brandy base but with distinct botanical profiles:

Imagin White is the most minimal expression: juniper berries, longan, white pomelo, jasmine flower, lemon, peach fruit tea, chrysanthemum flower, green cardamom and coriander. Crystal clear with bright citrus and white florals, soft fruit and light spice, and a clean, refreshing finish.

Imagin Red is vibrant and adventurous: juniper berries, red rose apple, strawberries, roselle flower, red damask rose flower, cranberries, red chili, green cardamom and coriander. Ripe red fruits and florals on the nose, with lively berry sweetness and gentle spice on the palate.

Imagin Blue explores floral calm and depth. Crystal clear with a soft blue hue, floral and fruity on the nose, balanced by juniper and gentle citrus. Smooth, refined and tranquil. Imagin Blue received Bronze (86 points) at the IWSC 2025 and scored 88 points at the London Spirits Competition 2025.

Imagin Black is the boldest expression: juniper berries, cacao nibs, Arabica coffee beans, cinnamon, osmanthus flower and Thai black cardamom. Deep and alluring, with roasted coffee and cacao on the nose, gentle spice and floral undertones, and a smooth, velvety finish. Imagin Black received Bronze (85 points) at the IWSC 2025 and scored 85 points at the London Spirits Competition 2025.

All four expressions are 40% ABV, available in 330 ml and 700 ml bottles, crafted in Curated Signature Batches, rested for a minimum of 120 days and 100% additive-free. Every bottle carries the strapline: Untouched by Artificial Enhancements.

Why Fusion Gin Matters

Fusion Gin matters for the same reason Rhum Agricole matters, and for the same reason additive-free spirits matter: it asks what the base is actually made of.

For decades, the gin industry has innovated almost exclusively through botanicals. Distillers have competed to find the most unusual, the most exotic, the most Instagram-worthy botanical combinations. But the base spirit, the majority of what is actually in the bottle, has remained an afterthought: cheap, neutral, interchangeable.

Fusion Gin challenges that assumption. It says the base spirit is not a vehicle; it is a participant. When you start with a characterful, high-quality fruit brandy and distil botanicals into it, you get a gin with a dimension of flavour that no amount of botanical creativity can achieve on a neutral spirit foundation. The base and the botanicals interact, creating complexity that neither could produce alone.

For bartenders, this opens a new set of possibilities. Fusion Gin works differently in cocktails because the base spirit contributes flavour in ways that neutral-based gins do not. Classic gin cocktails take on new dimensions; new cocktails become possible that would not work with a conventional gin.

For drinkers, Fusion Gin offers a gin experience that is genuinely new, not another variation on the same neutral-spirit-plus-botanicals formula, but a fundamentally different approach to what gin can be.
